Regions - Build Contacts
February 23rd, 2009
Regions
Help to organise four regional events to publicise the week.
• The Minister for Heritage is visiting Greenwood Forest in north Wales on the Friday, March 20 and we are in discussions for this to be the national launch event as well as the north Wales event.
• We want to back this up with three other regional events in the west, mid and south east of Wales and will be speaking to you through our regional WTA Executive members and other representatives that deal with WTA at a national level to help you where we can to achieve these goals.
On Your Doorstep
• As in 2007 and 2008, WTA is calling on your good efforts to set up one-to-one meetings with the politicians in your area- feel free to invite them to your businesses, restaurants, hotels, attractions- anywhere where they will experience the day-to-day industry in action and understand how you work and impact on the local economy;
• Raise the issues that matter to you and your local colleagues;
• Consider the press; it often works better for coverage if, as a local business, you contact your local media outlet directly as they feel a degree of obligation and ownership for the local businesses that exist in their area. However, if you want some help get in touch with WTA on Cardiff 02920 493685 and we'll see what we can do to help.
Publicise, Publicise, Publicise.
Remember- your efforts to set up a successful event must maximise the benefits to your business.
Boost your Business
Each WTW event is an opportunity to boost your business- or group of businesses- by putting yourself in the public spotlight and reminding politicians, fellow businesses and the public, of the wide range of high quality product available in Wales.
1. So register your WTW event with the WTA- e-mail info@wta.org.uk- and with the BTW website. Go to
2. http://www.britishtourismweek.com/
3. Click on 'Submit your event on line'.
It's free advertising and a natural media research tool. For just five minutes' effort and your business is visible to the rest of Britain.
Contact all of your local media; make your event a "diary" event for the paper or broadcaster and then supply them with information in the form of a press release. Will they attend? See if you can arrange to e-mail them pictures of the event if they are unable to turn up.
Raise The Key Issues
Get across how important tourism is to your local economy; talk about your employees or your ambitions for the business; your ideas for growth and for extending your offer. Demonstrate how the current financial climate is affecting your business and how and where government whether local or national can help. Show how you work with other
.
businesses- talk about your suppliers, any offers you run in conjunction with other local tourist businesses or attractions, your links with local retailers.
Build Contacts
And, most importantly, think of how you can build on the event. You have made great efforts to make a strong political contact, or to reinforce a contact that has been made in recent years and so consider how you can continue that relationship during the year.
Keep the media contact going- they may want to talk to your about business conditions or other tourism related issues..
